Author's Note: This story inspired me after viewing a reddit story that had a similar concept awhile back. With this one though it teaches an important lesson.
Our story begins with two teenagers walking down the beach
“Act casual,” Sebastian whispered to Derrick.
“Casual?” Derrick hissed. “I’ve never met a mermaid before!”
“Just don’t scare her away,” Sebastian said, pinching his friend’s elbow.
They strolled across the beach, arms swinging. Derrick’s feet felt as if he were treading on knives; his tongue was a dead jellyfish in his mouth. He couldn’t hear the ocean over the buzzing in his head.
The mermaid lay in the sand, contentedly reclining, pale and perfect breasts glistening in the sun. Her face was placid, faraway, dreaming. Little crabs sat on her shoulders, braiding seagrass into her shining turquoise hair.
Derrick stared at his feet. He was suddenly conscious of how clumsy and ugly they might appear to a beautiful sea creature. He saw himself in that moment as an enormous walrus, rolling and flopping about on land.
She beamed at him as he stood over her.
“Good evening,” she said.
“Hi,” he said, meekly. “I’m Derrick. This is Sebastian.”
“Pleasure to meet you, Derrick,” she replied. “Enjoying your day on my beach?”
“You bet,” he said, instantly brightening, feeling suddenly at ease. “Say, my friend and I are new to Seattle, and we were wondering if you’d recommend a good seafood restaurant. In fact, we’d love you to come with us.”
“Ah!” the mermaid said. “You know, I’ve seen fishermen take the biggest catches to Elliot’s Oyster House. It’s—“
Suddenly, Sebastian lunged forward, pulling a knife from his pocket.
Before Derrick could prevent a tragic event from happening the left side of his body was suddenly splattered with the blood and gore of Sebastian. Derrick could only watch in horror, terrified that one minute Sebastian was there and the next he exploded into bloody bits. He shift his focus to the mermaid before him yet whenever his eyes try to center on the exotic creature he squints his eyes as they ache at the sight of those cold black eyes of the mermaid.
"Really? How dense did you think I am? I've read your sorry excuse of a meatsack's intentions before he tried something"
Derrick couldn't respond, his mind is still processing over the events that transpired. Three things he has realized for certain is: He's not dreaming, there is a mermaid before him and she's pissed, and he now realized something that his grandfather advised him long ago.
"Don't mess with mermaids"
"Um....Did you explode my....associate with your mind" Derrick said, given that his so called friend tried to commit murder for some reason, even if the victim in question is a mermaid, isn't the kind of person worthy of the friend title
"No. That would be stupid. I just use invisible tendrils to rip him to shreds" The mermaid explained then studied the young man. As terrified as Derrick is he braced himself for whatever the Mermaid intends to do. "Eh. I'll let you go."
"Really?"
"You probably could have stopped him and give me an chance to escape. It would be illogical for me to slay you. I'd choose your friends carefully in the future though"
And with that Derrick just nods then watched as the mermaid jumps back into the ocean. He stood there for a few moments till he's certain the creature is gone, once he's sure he managed to let out a single..."Fuuuuuuuuuuck!"
Author's Note: To my credit the name associated with the story is highly unintentional. I just went with a name that popped in my head But if my bro is reading, feel free to use this story in any way you see fit.
