"I am awesome. Deal with it"If not one of the best anime villains of all time. I can be all day and analyze exactly why he is but I am just going to narrow down just one reason and one reason only. With some anime villains they try to hide behind their villainy with some BS tragic backstory. Like Emo Manchild from MHA. With Griffith's reason it's really no different than any standard anime protagonist motivation:
Luffy wanted to be King of The Pirates
Ash wanted to be a Pokemon Master
Naruto wanted to be Hokage
Goku wanted to be the best fighter there ever is
Even Deku wanted to be The World's Greatest Hero
What does these motivations have incommon with Griffith's motivation? He wanted to be King. If Griffith were an legit anime protagonist then you'd see a series where you'd have a guy like Griffith raise an army who grew to become a ragtag bunch of misfits and Nakama to their leader. Just look at the cast and the Shonen formula is all there. Griffith is Shonen Main Dude with an Impossible Dream. Casca is the Take No Shit Tsundere with a loyalty to the Shonen Hero. Guts is the Hotblooded Rebel With An Attitude who was the rival to the hero and became a friend down the road.
Then the writer of Berserk flipped the script and used the Shonen Hero character trait and provided it as a villain motivation for Griffith. By turning it into a character study on just how far the hero is willing to sacrifice everything before he eventually becomes the villain? When The Eclipse happened we are all fully aware just how far Griffith was willing to go. And it's a dark reminder that he never even saw his crew as his Nakama, just a means to an end to achieve his dream.

Griffith's a guy? But seriously, excellent points! His story is like the inverse deconstruction of the typical Shonen Hero Storyline, twisting and turning it on its head. And that's all part of what makes The Golden Age Arc work so great! Of course, then he goes and sends the world to Hell. So. Yeah. But up until he got captured and tortured, I feel like Griffith had the best intentions. After that though there was no going back. You could even argue that he ultimately got screwed by destiny. The God Hand had their eyes on him for years and that behelit was going to be his ticket in no matter what.

This is exactly why I consider The Golden Age Arc the best of the series. Because you can easily just base it on a shonen series, a violent one but a shonen series regardless. Heck it even reads as a classic fantasy series. Then you'd gradually start to notice something the moment the monsters are introduced. While the story is still great the other stories lacked the kind of Gut Punch that the Golden Age Arc provided. I did like how it handled Casca regaining her sanity and NOT glossing over her sexual assault though.
